Shopify shipping rates for heavy goods
Parcel and LTL freight rates at checkout, priced like you actually ship.
EZ Rates packs the cart into real cartons and pallets, quotes your own UPS and freight accounts, applies your rules, and shows the customer the real price. Built by a shelving company that replaced ShipperHQ and calibrated it against a year of its own labels.
How it works
Three steps between the cart and the carrier.
Products, read once
Weights from the variant. Dimensions, shipping groups, freight class and origin from metafields, including the ShipperHQ ones you already have, so migration is a sync, not a re-entry.
Cartons and pallets, not guesses
Own-footprint cartons, nesting of shorter flats, per-package weight caps, dimensional weight, and palletization that grows a 48x40 skid to the longest carton and classes it by density.
Your carriers, your rules
UPS, FedEx, USPS, DHL for parcel. Freightview and XPO for LTL. Markups, hide-and-show rules, residential detection, radius-based local delivery and pickup. Whole-cart freight when anything must ship on a pallet.
Freight, done properly
Most rate apps stop at parcel. Heavy goods don't.
Shelving, racking, furniture, fitness equipment, building products. If part of your catalog ships on a pallet, a parcel-only app shows the customer nothing or something wrong. EZ Rates was built from the freight side first.
Freight classes and must-ship-freight
- NMFC class per product or per shipping group
- Density class fallback when a product has none
- Any must-ship-freight item sends the whole cart LTL
Real handling units
- Cartons are palletized, not quoted as 14 loose boxes
- Pallet grows to the longest carton, capped at 72 in and 2,500 lb
- Liftgate, residential and inside delivery as accessorials
Freightview and XPO connectors
- One Freightview key quotes every carrier you've contracted
- Show cheapest, fastest, guaranteed, or the carrier name
- Exclude carriers you don't want at checkout
Parcel that matches the label
- Own-footprint cartons and nesting of shorter flats
- Per-package UPS weight caps, dimensional weight
- Dropship groups rated as their own shipment, never $0
Rules that read like policy
- Markup or discount by method, group, zone, customer group
- "Freight only over 225 lb", "hide ground if residential"
- Local delivery and pickup within a mile radius of the warehouse
Insights you can act on
- Every checkout rate request logged for 90 days
- Explain view: packages, carriers called, rules applied
- Replay past orders to calibrate before you go live
- Or just ask Sidekick: it reads the same logs

AI assistants
Ask your shipping app a question.
Inside Shopify, Sidekick already knows EZ Rates: ask it to quote a cart, explain why a checkout showed a price, find products missing dimensions and open them in the app to fix. Nothing to configure. Outside Shopify, EZ Rates runs an MCP server, so Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or Claude Code can do the same with a store key from Settings. Included on Growth and Enterprise.
Freight only > 225 lb hid UPS Ground. Freightview returned Estes at $343.50; the 20% freight markup made it $412.20. The uprights have no dimensions, so they were palletized at the default footprint.FAQ
Before you install.
Does my Shopify plan support carrier-calculated rates?
Third-party calculated rates are included on Shopify Advanced and Plus. On other plans Shopify adds them when you switch to annual billing or pay a monthly add-on; contact Shopify support to enable it. This applies to every rate app, not only EZ Rates.
Do I need my own carrier accounts?
Yes. EZ Rates quotes your negotiated rates through your UPS, FedEx, USPS, DHL, Freightview or XPO account. Flat rate, table rate, local delivery and pickup need no account. Credentials are stored encrypted and used only to request rates.
How long does migrating from ShipperHQ take?
An afternoon for most stores. EZ Rates reads the ShipperHQ metafields you already have (dimensions, shipping groups, freight class, origins), seeds the same group names, and lets you replay last month's orders to compare rates before you switch the shipping profile.
What happens if a carrier is slow or down?
Each carrier has a time cap inside Shopify's checkout limit, results are cached for five minutes, and a backup carrier of your choice answers when every live carrier fails. The customer never sees an empty shipping step because of us.
What data do you keep?
Store details, the product shipping attributes needed to rate, and checkout rate logs for 90 days. Uninstalling deletes the store's data within 48 hours. See the privacy policy.
